When customers talk to us about a blow molding machine, one of the first questions is often: “Can this machine produce different products?”
The answer is yes, but it is not simply a matter of changing the mold.
A machine that is suitable for a 500L water tank may not be the best choice for a 220L chemical drum, plastic pallet or road barrier. Even if the products look similar from the outside, their production requirements can be very different.
The Product Determines the Machine Configuration
From our experience, we normally look at several things before recommending a machine.
Product size and weight are the first considerations. A large 5,000L water tank naturally requires much higher extrusion capacity and stronger machine construction than a small container.
Then comes wall thickness. Some products need relatively uniform walls, while others require more material around the bottom, corners or stress-bearing areas. For these products, precise parison control becomes very important.
The mold size and clamping requirements also cannot be ignored. A machine may have enough extrusion capacity but still be unsuitable if the mold dimensions or clamping system do not match the product.
Cooling is another important factor. Large hollow products contain a lot of heat, so the cooling system needs to work efficiently and consistently. Otherwise, production cycle time and product stability can both be affected.
| Product | Main Considerations |
| Water Tanks | Size, wall thickness, cooling |
| Chemical Drums | Strength, material distribution, consistency |
| IBC Inner Bottles | Multi-layer structure, wall thickness |
| Plastic Pallets | Structural strength, cycle time |
| Road Barriers | Weight distribution, rigidity, production efficiency |
This is why we do not recommend choosing a blow molding machine simply by looking at the maximum product volume.
A “5,000L machine” or “10,000L machine” is only the starting point. The actual product dimensions, weight, material, wall thickness, mold and production target all need to be considered together.
What We Focus on at SHANDONG GREAT MACHINERY
When we design a machine for a customer, we first try to understand what they actually want to produce and how they plan to produce it.
For large and complex products, our machines can be equipped with MOOG 200-point parison control to help adjust wall thickness in different sections. This is particularly useful when different parts of a product require different material distribution.
We also pay attention to extrusion stability, cooling, clamping, machine structure and long-term production performance.
In our opinion, a good blow molding machine is not simply a machine that can produce one product.
That is why machine configuration should always start with the product, not just the machine model.
