Why Is My Blow Molding Machine Consuming So Much Energy?

When customers talk to me about blow molding machines, they usually ask about price, output, or product size first. But after a machine has been running for several years, I often hear a different question:

“Why is my electricity bill getting higher and higher?”

From our experience at SHANDONG GREAT MACHINERY, high energy consumption is rarely caused by one single component. A blow molding machine is a complete system, and every part of the production cycle matters.

Where Does the Energy Actually Go?

For an extrusion blow molding machine, electricity is consumed by several major systems:

One thing we have learned is that energy saving is not simply about installing a “high-efficiency motor.” The whole production cycle needs to work efficiently.

Why Servo-Hydraulic Systems Matter

This is where we see a real difference in daily production.

On a traditional hydraulic system, the pump can continue running even when the machine does not need full hydraulic output. Part of that energy becomes heat, which then creates another problem—the oil needs additional cooling.

A servo-hydraulic system adjusts motor speed according to the actual movement and pressure demand. When the machine needs more power, it responds. When demand falls, power consumption falls with it. This can also reduce oil heating and operating noise.

But I don’t like telling customers that “servo means 40% energy saving” without context. Actual savings depend on the product, cycle time, machine configuration, and production conditions. Energy should be measured on the actual production line.

When we design a machine, we don’t look at energy consumption separately from production stability.

Our large blow molding machines can be equipped with energy-saving servo-hydraulic systems, optimized extrusion systems, and intelligent Siemens PLC control. Combined with MOOG 200-point parison control, the goal is not simply to use less electricity, but to use energy where it actually creates value.

For us, a truly energy-efficient machine is not the machine with the lowest power rating on the nameplate.

It is the machine that uses energy efficiently while producing stable products, cycle after cycle.
